"SO MUCH IN THIRTY (YEARS)": 'RAFAEL DIESTE' 30th ANNIVERSARY

This school year sees our school become 30.

There hasn't been an official celebration like 5 years ago when we celebrated its 25th anniversary. You can remember what happened back then on our previous posts about RD25Years.

But our school's Dinamización Lingüística team has released a bookmark with a commemorative design by Victoria García-Rebull Cuiñas with this year's calendar on the reverse side. The slogan "TANTO EN TRINTA" ("SO MUCH IN THIRTY [YEARS]") was an idea by one of our Galician teachers Dores Castro Villar.

24th-OCT: LIBRARIES DAY

October 24th is Library Day in Spain. This year our school library has celebrated it with several exhibitions, which you can see on a post on our library blog clicking HERE.
- An exhibition of photos of the best world's libraries, and as you can see not of them are in  luxurious buildings. Some libraries are in the strangest places: a beach, a donkey's back... or, as in the UK, in old telephone boxes, which have been recycled into mini-libraries where bookcrossing is practiced. In this video you can see an example:

This is how it all started, the first post:

STARTING OFF A NEW COURSE: 2009-2010

We're about to start a new course. This course 2009-2010, we want to make this blog be a relevant teaching tool. A place where you will be able to find help, practice, and an opportunity to use, see, read, listen to English in context in a meaningful way. It starts as an experiment... let's see where we get to. Good luck to all!

50 YEARS OF PRIDE

On June 28, LGBTIQA Pride Day is commemorated worldwide. The march known as "Pride" is an exhibition of colours. However its origin is born among riots. The march seeks to claim their rights and celebrate diversity,
This year sees the 50th anniversary of the riots that happened on June 28 at the Stonewall Inn in New York. In 1969 the different sexual orientations were considered as a mental illness. In addition, in many cases people were arrested for "public indecency".

BLOOMSDAY

Bloomsday celebrates the date in which James Joyce's "Ulises" novel takes place: June 16th. It comes from the name of its main character Leopold Bloom, who on that day of 1904 travelled around Dublin in the novel. The book tells about what happens that only day. It's said that Joyce chose this day because it was the anniversary of the first time he dated with who would be his wife, Nora Barnacle. Joyce's fans get dressed up in costumes of the time during the Bloomsday Festivals (held every year between 11th & 16th June).

15 YEARS OF WIKIPEDIA

Yesterday, January 15th Wikipedia, Internet's free encyclopedia, celebrated their 15th birthday. It's been working since January 15th 2011. Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger created it.
It was born as a webpage in English, but nowadays it has articles written in 287 languages. 28 of them have more than 300.000 articles each. Only in Spanish there are more than one million articles. Totally there are more than 38 million pages about every topic you can imagine inside it. Only between 2005 and 2015 the number of articles were multiplied by 10, as there are more than 700 new pages created every day. Each month the web receives 500 million visits.
Last year Princess of Asturias International Cooperation Prize was awarded to it for making universal knowledge accesible to everybody.

21st OCTOBER 2015: "BACK TO THE FUTURE" DAY

For many people, October 21st 2015 might be an insignificant date. However if you've seen the film "BACK TO THE FUTURE II", you'll know the day is here. Yes, the date when Doc and Marty McFly got into the DeLorean car converted into a time machine and travelled into the future.
No doubt, the film starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd has been a hit and has created a great number of fans interested in seeing which things have become true in real life and which not.
"Where are we? When are we?" Driving along a motorway in the sky and Doc shows McFly the time calendar in the DeLorean. "We're in the XXIst century, in Hill Valley, California. It's 4:29 of Wednesday 21st October 2015" "We're in the future!". That's how the second part of "BACK TO THE FURURE" (1989) starts. A film that has become an icon in pop culture and a marketing success selling related memorabilia.
The future is here: this Wednesday is the day. By chance. Because in 1985 when the first film was premiered, no sequel had been planned. But the great success of this first film became a trilogy. With the second film they travelled to the future and Zemeckis, the film-director,  fantasized about how the world would be like in 2015.
Videocalls, digital binoculars, multiple TV channels, online shopping, digital fingerprints to open doors, flying cars and roller skates, total climate control, neon bars on road sides, biofuel... Many of Zemeckis inventions in fiction have become or will soon be true.
Others stay as simple crazy ideas or wild dreams...

25th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALL OF THE WALL

Two photos showing the difference in 25 years: upper photo 1989, lower one, the same place Brandemburg Gate, Berlin in 2014
25 years later, the 15km long siluette of the wall throughout Berlin is marked with thousands of illuminated balloons which have been lit this weekend to commemorate it.

Today marks another 25th anniversary celebration yet. It's also 25 years of the fall of the wall, the one which divided Berlin and Germany in two parts, and even the whole world. The wall built in 1961 was also known under the name of the Iron Curtain separating Europe from the communist Eastern side.
