[11thCW] "SURFIN' U.S.A.", BEACH BOYS

To close down our cultural week, another classic song of the 60s that connects with the sea, the ocean, and a water related sport: surfing.
It's a happy way to end the week looking forward to a great summer by the sea.

The Beach Boys, American rock band formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961. The group's original lineup consisted of brothers BrianDennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Distinguished by their vocal harmonies, adolescent-oriented themes, and musical ingenuity, they are one of the most influential acts of the rock era.

We include video with lyrics.

[11thCW] BREAKING NEWS! SUEZ CANAL BLOCKED BY CONTAINER SHIP

Almost ending this cultural week devoted to the sea, we've learnt about the blockage of Egypt's Suez Canal by a huge container ship since last Tuesday.
The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez; and dividing Africa and Asia. It's one of the world's most used commercial routes and this blockage is becoming a big problem for the transportation of food, goods and oil. The price of oil and gas has already increased since then.
The "Ever Given" container ship from Taiwan, which has blocked the canal, is a 220,000 ton megaship got stuck in the sand on the eastern bank of the canal.

These graphics (taken from the British newspaper "The Guardian") show the situation:

[11thCW] "OCEAN EYES", BILLIE EILISH

Today's sea related song is "OCEAN EYES" by Billie Eilish.

Lyrics:

I've been watchin' you for some time
Can't stop starin' at those ocean eyes
Burning cities and napalm skies
Fifteen flares inside those ocean eyes
Your ocean eyes
No fair
You really know how to make me cry
When you gimme those ocean eyes
I'm scared
I've never fallen from quite this high
Fallin' into your ocean eyes
Those ocean eyes
I've been walkin' through a world gone blind
Can't stop thinkin' of your diamond mind
Careful creature made friends with time
He left her lonely with a diamond mind
And those ocean eyes
No fair
You really know how to make me cry
When you gimme those ocean eyes
I'm scared
I've never fallen from quite this high

[11thCW] "WE BELONG TO THE SEA", AQUA

"WE BELONG TO THE SEA", today's song about the sea by the group Aqua.

Lyrics:

Take me to the ocean blue
Let me dive right into
Anything I'll ever capture
You can wait up all night
Waiting for wrong or right
I always knew where I had you
You can lie on my waves
You can sleep in my caves
Living on the edge of peace
Knowing that water can freeze
Do you still want me to open?
Come on into my waves
You can sleep in my caves
Let me know that you will hold me
Till the tides take my soul
We belong to the sea
To the waves you and me
Living in the ocean so blue
We belong to the sea
Open wide being free
A minute everlasting with you
And as soon as it stops
We'll all be a drop
Coming down on your wide open sea
Can you wash me away
Will you dry me one day
Take me to the place where I came from
If I had an open heart
Would you tear that apart?
Why do I feel that you're lonesome?
Come on into my waves
You can sleep in my caves
Let me know that you will hold me
Till the tides take my soul
We belong to the sea
To the waves you and me
Living in the ocean so blue
We belong to the sea
Open wide being free
A minute everlasting with you
And as soon as it stops
We'll all be a drop
Coming down on your wide open sea
There's a thunder inside me
That your silence will kill
And I know that you forced me
To get rid of what I feel
We belong to the sea (Oh, yeah)
To the waves you and me (Oh, oh)
Living in the ocean so blue
We belong to the sea
Open wide being free
A minute everlasting with you (Ooh, ooh)
And as soon as it stops (Stops)
We'll all be a drop (Drop)
Coming down on your wide open sea
Ooh, yeah, yeah, ooh

[11thCW] "THE HEART SHAPED SEA", ROXETTE

Another sea-song by the Swedish duo Roxette, "THE HEART SHAPED SEA".

Lyrics:

Baby, it's time to tell me that it's over
Tell me that it's over, it's plain to see
And this time, we won't be starting over
No crying on your shoulder into the heart-shaped sea

Oh, you've been a-running from our door
And you've been enchanted by the gracious voice of love

Baby, it's time to look me in the eyes
Time to say good-bye, it's clear to me
And this time I won't let you down
You can turn around, I'll set you free

Oh, you've been a-sailing from ashore
And you've been enchanted by someone from afar

Baby, it's time to gather all the harvest
To pray before the winter and sail the heart-shaped sea
Oh, you've been a-running from my love
And you've been enchanted by the powers up above

[11thCW] "THE SEA", A SONG BY HAEVN

To signal the beginning of our 11th Cultural Week devoted to THE SEA, here's a song in English with the same title by a Dutch band called Haevn (founded in 2015 by singer-songwriter Marijn van der Meer and composer Jorrit Kleijnen. The band currently also includes guitarist Bram Doreleijers, bass player Mart Jeninga, and drummer David Broeders.)

Lyrics of the song:

Sunrays touch the coastline Warm the cotton, show the dust The long nights are gone with the river The water's been waiting long enough We float on the river of time Hold steady, hold steady The sea comes cause the summer forced out the cold The boat fought the change of the tides Hold steady, hold steady Storm for hours, and rainy days And all our lives we're told The stream will take us home Sunrays touch the coastline Warm our feet, show the glare We walk through the sand in the warm night The water will take the weight from us And all our lives we're told The stream will take us home And all our lives we're told The stream will take us home We sold our lives to the sea The sky lights up from the beach

[11thCW] "THE SONG OF THE SEA" (film & song)

The enchanting Irish animation SONG OF THE SEA tells the story of Ben and his little sister Saoirse – the last Seal-child – who embark on a fantastic journey across a fading world of ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their home by the sea. The film takes inspiration from the mythological Selkies of Irish folklore, who live as seals in the sea but become humans on land.

SONG OF THE SEA, directed by Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells) features the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Pat Shortt and Jon Kenny.

[11thCW] SEA SHANTIES, THE OLD TRADITIONAL SEAMEN'S SONGS (+"FISHERMEN'S FRIENDS", THE FILM)

A sea shanty, chantey, or chanty is a genre of traditional folk song that was once commonly sung as a work song to accompany rhythmical labor aboard large merchant sailing vessels. They were found mostly on British and other European ships, and some had roots in lore and legend.
Here we've compiled a few as an example:
Audios with lyrics:

Video "KEEP HAULING", Fishermen's Friends:

Video "No hopers, jokers & rogues", Fishermen's Friends:

Video "Drunken sailor", Fishermen's Friends:

Fisherman's Friends is a 2019 British romantic comedy film directed by Chris Foggin from a screenplay by Nick Moorcroft, Meg Leonard and Piers Ashworth.

The film is based on a true story about Fisherman's Friends, a group of Cornish fishermen from Port Isaac who were signed by Universal Records and achieved a top 10 hit with their debut album of traditional sea shanties. Below is the trailer of the film.

Film's plot: A fast living, cynical London music executive, Danny, reluctantly heads to Cornwall on his colleague Henry's stag weekend, where he's pranked by his boss, Troy, into trying to sign a group of shanty-singing fishermen. Danny becomes the ultimate ‘fish out of water’ struggling to gain the respect and enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band that consists of Jim, Jago, Leadville and Rowan, who all value friendship and community over fame and fortune. Attempting to overcome the fishermen's scepticism about the music business, Danny finds himself drawn into the community, has his integrity tested and ultimately is shown the meaning of loyalty, love and friendship. This forces Danny to re-evaluate what really matters in life; ultimately giving him the chance of a different kind of success which leads to him falling in love with Jim's daughter, Alwyn.
