BOOK DAY 2021 @ 'BIBLIODIESTE'

[Cover photo from XIXth century edition of 'Robinson Crusoe']

April 23rd is BOOK DAY. This year our school library has proposed an activity to commemorate this day: to fill up the library's noticeboard with book sleeves that students, teachers and school staff hand in. It can be the book you're reading, one that you like a lot or of special interest... The noticeboard will be covered with all the ones received.
I have chosen and sent Daniel Defoe's "ROBINSON CRUSOE", his first novel published in 1719. The book is an exciting story of a shipwreck and adventure on a tropical island. It's also considered the first English novel and one of the great myths of Western civilization with Don Quixote or Faust.
Apart from this, my choice, among other reasons, is because Robinson Crusoe set off on his adventure trip from the place where I was born: Kingston upon HULL.

These are the photos of all the book sleeves sent on display:

[11thCW] "SURFIN' U.S.A.", BEACH BOYS

To close down our cultural week, another classic song of the 60s that connects with the sea, the ocean, and a water related sport: surfing.
It's a happy way to end the week looking forward to a great summer by the sea.

The Beach Boys, American rock band formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961. The group's original lineup consisted of brothers BrianDennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Distinguished by their vocal harmonies, adolescent-oriented themes, and musical ingenuity, they are one of the most influential acts of the rock era.

We include video with lyrics.

[11thCW] BREAKING NEWS! SUEZ CANAL BLOCKED BY CONTAINER SHIP

Almost ending this cultural week devoted to the sea, we've learnt about the blockage of Egypt's Suez Canal by a huge container ship since last Tuesday.
The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez; and dividing Africa and Asia. It's one of the world's most used commercial routes and this blockage is becoming a big problem for the transportation of food, goods and oil. The price of oil and gas has already increased since then.
The "Ever Given" container ship from Taiwan, which has blocked the canal, is a 220,000 ton megaship got stuck in the sand on the eastern bank of the canal.

These graphics (taken from the British newspaper "The Guardian") show the situation:
