WOMEN'S DAY 2018
No classes today because the Council of A Coruña decided to declare a holiday on the International Women's Day. But also it's a day of social protest all around the world as women have decided to go on strike and demonstrations for their rights.
We're celebrating this day, remembering previous posts on this blog for this day: WOMEN.

THE UGLY TRUTH OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS
Here's a video which shows the ugly truth of children's books when it comes to display the relevant presence of determined female charcters in them. In the picture you can see shelves packed with books... there'll be just a fewin the video at the end of the selection.
Equality doesn't exist here, though things are changing, as you will also see.

SUFFRAGETTES IN ACTION: "VOTE FOR WOMEN!" [7th CW]
SUFFRAGETTE EMILY DAVISON KILLED IN ACTION*
In this post we include several photos referring to the suffragette movement in action.
First photo: recreation of the typical suffragette outfit.
Second photo: Emmeline Pankhurst giving a speech.
Third photo: Emmeline Pankhurst being arrested in front of Buckingham Palace in May 1914.
Fourth photo: Annie Kenney & Christabel Pankhurst, founders of the WSPU (Women's Social & political Union)
Fifth photo: a group of women from the National Women's Social and Political Union during a demonstration.
Video of the moment when Emily Davison was run over by the King's horse:
*Emily Davison (School teacher, 1872-1913) was a distinguished suffragette activist of the feminist movement lead by the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), at the beginning of the XXth century in Britain. They fought for the right of women's vote.
Emily Davison had taken part in several terrorist acts against public buildings without any damage to people. Having being arrested and condemned several times, she carried out many hunger strikes in prison. During another protest act, she threw herself down a stair case suffering severe spinal injuries. Once she had recovered, she realized that the cause needed a determined action, on June 4th 1913, she walked in front of Anmer, the king's owned horse during Epsom Derby. Emily's intentions aren't very clear. Some theories state that her intention wasn't suicide as she had bought a return train ticket from Epsom. She just wanted to stop the horse and place a WSPU scarf. The collision was brutal and she was pulled along the horse track as can be seen in the video. She died four days later at Epsom Rural Hospital because of a skull fracture.

Finally, vote for women over 30 was achieved in 1918. In 1920, it was equal as men, over 21.

SUFFRAGETTE [7th CW]
Next Friday, a new film will be premiered in cinemas throughout Spain. "SUFFRAGETTE" is a 2015 British historical period drama directed by Sarah Gavron and written by Abi Morgan. The film stars Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, and Meryl Streep. It tells the story of the Suffragetts movement at the beginning of the XXth century. INTERNATIONAL WOMAN'S DAY 2013: "A PROMISE IS A PROMISE: TIME FOR ACTION TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN"
Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women's Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.
International Women's Day was first observed as a popular event after 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace.
The UN theme for International Women's Day 2013 is "A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women," while International Women's Day 2013 has declared the year's theme as The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum.
