[13th CW] CITY STATISTICS: LARGEST CITIES IN THE WORLD

World City Populations 2023

[Info from worldpopulationreview.com/world-cities]

What are the most populated cities in the world?

Here is a list of the top ten most populated cities in the world:

1. Tokyo (Population: 37,435,191)
2. Delhi (Population: 29,399,141)
3. Shanghai (Population: 26,317,104)
4. Sao Paulo (Population: 21,846,507)
5. Mexico City (Population: 21,671,908)
6. Cairo (Population: 20,484,965)
7. Dhaka (Population: 20,283,552)
8. Mumbai (Population: 20,185,064)
9. Beijing (Population: 20,035,455)
10. Osaka (Population: 19,222,665)

It is perhaps unsurprising that the majority of the most populous cities in the world are in the two most populated countries in the world, China and India. Among these are Shanghai and Beijing, with populations of 25 and 22 million respectively, Delhi (27 million), and Mumbai (over 21.5 million).

However, Tokyo is the largest city in the world if the entire Tokyo metro area is included, with a total of more than 38 million residents. Another Japanese city, Osaka, also has a very large population of almost 20.5 million. There are also a number of non-Asian cities with high populations, including Mexico City (over 21 million), Cairo (almost 19.5 million), and Buenos Aires (almost 15.5 million).

Of the European cities, Istanbul is the most populous, with more than 14.5 million residents. This is followed by Moscow (over 12 million) and Paris (11 million including the Paris metro area). These cities are of course also culturally significant and between them welcome millions of tourists each year.

There are quite a number of popular and culturally rich cities that have smaller populations, often making for higher living standards for their residents. Barcelona, Sydney, Berlin and Vancouver all have fewer than five million residents, but are very popular choices for city living. There are also some comparatively very small cities with big cultural, historical or political reputations, such as Sarajevo (314,000), Edinburgh (502,000), and Venice (631,000), demonstrating that small cities can be highly significant regardless of the size of their population.

[13th CW] CITY SONGS: "DETROIT CITY", TEXAS

This 2013 song by the Scottish band Texas was devoted to the American city of Detroit, in Michigan, famous for its once important car industry and music home of the Motown style. Lyrics of song below after video.

Said you got tired of the same old rock n roll
Let's anew at sunset life with a lot more soul

Well I know you spend a lot of time alone in your head
Remember what you said
I never thought you'd be so easily lead

One million lights, they're burning our eyes til the morning
Run for our lives as you watch all the cars on the freeway

And you said I... I come from Detroit City
I... I'm hard to satisfy
And I want someone like you, you look so pretty
In Detroit City

You said you got some on the city again, it's dreams
They make cuts in the heat while the siren screams

I couldn't believe someone like me would leave you so weak
We're dancing in the street
You know we don't need no sleep

One million lights, they're burning our eyes til the morning
Run for our lives as you watch all the cars on the freeway

And you said I... I come from Detroit City
I... I'm hard to satisfy
And I want someone like you, you look so pretty
In Detroit City

And now the lights are burning out
And now the boys are turning back
But you stay here with me
In the city

And he said I... I come from Detroit City
I... I'm hard to satisfy
And I want someone like you, you look so pretty
In Detroit City

Detroit City
Detroit City
Detroit City
Detroit, Detroit, Detroit

[13th CW] CITY SONGS: "BARCELONA", FREDDIE MERCURY & MONTSERRAT CABALLÉ

Beginning today a series of posts devoted to songs in English which have some relationship with cities. To start with the iconic duet between Freddie Mercury and Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé singing "Barcelona", the song which celebrates this city hosting the Olympic Games in 1992. Lyrics below after video.

I had this perfect dream
Un sueno me envolvio
This dream was me and you
Tal vez esta aqui
I want all the world to see
Un instinto me guiaba
A miracle sensation
My guide and inspiration
Now my dream is slowly coming true
The wind is a gentle breeze
EI me hablo de ti
The bells are ringing out
EI canto vuela
They're calling us together
Guiding us forever
Wish my dream would never go away

Barcelona
It was the first time that we met
Barcelona
How can I forget
The moment that you stepped into the room
You took my breath away

Barcelona
La musica vibro
Barcelona
Yella nos unio
And if God is willing
We will meet again
Someday

Let the songs begin
Dejalo nacer
Let the music play
Ah
Make the voices sing
Nace un gran amor
Start the celebration
Ven a mi
And cry
Grita
Come alive
Vive
And shake the foundations from the skies
Shaking all our lives

Barcelona
Such a beautiful horizon
Barcelona
Like a jewel in the sun
Por ti sere gaviota de tu bella mar
Barcelona
Suenan las campanas
Barcelona
Abre tus puertas al mundo
If God is willing
If God is willing
If God is willing
Friends until the end

Viva!
Barcelona!

NOUNS vs VERBS: THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THEIR STRESSED SYLLABLE

Vocabulary is very flexible in English, the same word without any ortographic difference can be a noun or a verb, but the difference lies in its pronunciation. The stressed syllable changes: if it's a noun, the first syllable is stressed. When it's a verb, the stress falls on the second one. Above some examples, but there are many others.
